What about the third option?

It is never black & white

Reader,

I just wrapped a wildly empowering conversation with a client. But it didn't start out empowering. It started out heavy, dreading, and dripping with that it-is-what-it-is-and-I-just-need-to-get-this-over-with energy.

We've all been there.

I asked him to lay out the options in this tough situation. He described Option A and Option B, each with more cons than pros.

Silence.

Me: "And?"

Him: "And, I need to decide. It's killing me."

Me: "Right. So let's explore all the options."

Him: "I just told you the options. They both suck."

Me: "Yep. They do suck. But... I don't buy that it's A or B. What else is possible?"

Him: "... ... Oh. ... Wait, yeah! ... I guess I don't have to do it either of those ways. [Wheels turning...] I could actually try [three brilliant ideas]!"

That, my brilliant leader friends, is where the empowerment arose.

In asking "What else is possible?"

Black and white thinking is a mind trap. It's a misguided attempt at efficiency. It does tend to move us to act, but rarely gets an optimal outcome.

So where are you caught in black and white thinking? Ask yourself what else is possible and see what happens!

If you get stuck, hit reply. I'll help.

Keep growing,
